Basketball Language.

This week for writing we got to chose something we were passionate about and write down specific language that goes with that topic. After that we had to write a text about the topic we chose with all the specific words that we had written down before, my topic was basketball and these were all of my specific words that I used in my text: Dribble, inbound, rebound, pass, shoot, dunk, steal, layup, crossover, bucket, score, free throw, foul, ark, shot and block. Here is my text about basketball filled with all my specific words, enjoy!

The Amazing Sport of Basketball

Basketball is an amazing sport filled with exciting dunks, outstanding threes and spectacular moves. In this text I will talk all about the awesome sport of basketball.

A game of basketball starts when the ref chucks the ball up from half court and the centers of both teams jump and reach for who will start with possession in the game. Both teams perform special plays and talented moves to break past defenders and score the ball in the hoop.

Scores can happen in many different ways, a basket is always worth 2 points unless the player does an amazing shot from behind the ark then it is worth 3 points. Players dribble past their defenders to get open shots and find open teammates, defenders will always try their best to stop the opposition score so when the offense starts to shoot a defensive player can rise up as high as they can and block the ball for getting anywhere near the hoop.

Free throws happen when a player gets pulled or wacked while in the act of shooting. A free throw is worth one point, talented players are very skilled at drawing fouls and getting to the foul line earning easy points for their team.

If the ball is out of bonds or the player with the ball steps out then the opposing team will take an inbound were they will stand outside of the court and pass the ball in to one of their open players and play will continue.

Players go back and forth on offense and defense trying to score points and reject opponents. All these acts come together to create an exciting and breathtaking game that millions of people around the globe enjoy to watch. Basketball is a truly amazing sport and I hope that you learned a little more about the awesome game of basketball.

Who’s your favorite basketball players?

Amazing Roller Coasters

This week for reading we had many different options of what we could learn about. There were many choices including learning about the Haka, turning old into new, all about fossils and what I chose roller coasters. You could choose three options and each option had a unique create. I learned a lot about roller coasters like how if roller coasters have to many G-forces they will not be safe for a human to ride. For this create we had to make a roller coaster on a google drawing, I found this really fun and I hope you enjoy it!

Have you ever been on a roller coaster?

Health and Posture!

This week for reading we have been learning all about posture and how standing can positively affect our health and overall better our lives. We read a text called ‘Don’t sit if you want to get fit’ and it showed us all about how sitting had causes many health problems and standing has many benefits. Our create was to make a piece of furniture like a chair or table that would improve our posture and benefit our health, I chose to make a chair with a plate at the front to keep your back straight and help you have good posture. Here is my create!

I hope you enjoyed my blog! What could you do to improve your posture?

Champion of Peace Learning!

For the last four weeks of Term 3 we were learning about ‘How we can be Champions of Peace’.

Firstly we learnt about the different symbols of peace. Some of these are a dove holding a olive branch, the CND symbol and a hand holding up a v shape with the index and middle fingers.

These symbols represent peace and are known all over the world. The dove holding a olive branch shows peace because in the bible story Noah’s Ark after the flood had happened a dove with an olive branch in its mouth returned and was a sign of hope for Noah and gave him peace. The circle with three lines (also known as the CND symbol) was invented by a british artist in 1958. It is a sign of peace because it was used as the symbol for the british nuclear disarmament movement and ever since has been a symbol for peace on earth. The hand holding up a V shape represents peace because it was used as a sign of victory back in world war 2 and in the Vietnam war, during these times the hand gesture started to become a symbol of peace and today this symbol is widely known as the peace sign and is used commonly in the modern era.

With these symbols in mind I created a Peace Artwork. My Peace Artwork represents peace because it shows that no matter what you are wearing or what you look like the only thing that matters is what is in your heart and everyone should love one another no matter what race or skin color they are.

We also researched some real life champions of peace and wrote a short biography. I wrote about Martin Luther King, I thought this person was a champion of peace because he knew that there was a problem and he spoke out about it trying his very best to make change and inspire millions.

We also created a peace prayer book. I have attached my peace prayer book here.

I enjoyed learning about peace because it showed me that if we strive for world peace everyone can live a happy life loving one another equally.

I learnt that peace can come in many different forms like environmental peace and world peace but peace has one goal and it is to make everyone love each other and live happy lives without anger and war.

One way I plan on being a champion of peace is by helping those who I see struggling, even if it is something small like opening the door for someone I will do it and continue to try help everybody that is in need of help whenever I can. What can you do to make our earth more peaceful?

Amazing Geometry!

This week in maths we have been learning all about geometry and most importantly symmetry. Symmetry is when a shape is the same on both sides like a reflection cut down the middle. For example a square is symmetrical because if you cut it in half then both sides are the exact same when flipped.  Symmetrical shapes can be cut vertical, horizontal or even diagonal, there are many different ways that shapes can be symmetrical. For our create this week we were tasked to create our own symmetrical shape and make it into floor tiles. Our tile had to include 6 different shapes and colors. Below is my create, enjoy!

I hope you learned something from this blog and if so what it was? How many symmetrical shapes can you name?

Wonderful Reading!

This week for reading we have been reading this story named boot camp. This text is about a man named Joey and his dark past with gangs and crime, this text also involves many of Joey’s relationships with his family like his sister and his nana. To recap this text very simply it is about how Joey is trying to turn his life around after getting kicked out of his nana’s house because of gang problems and drinking addictions. Joey is also trying to recover the relationships with his family he lost with his crime filled past. We were tasked with creating our very own backstory for Joey. I thought that his backstory was filled with crime and illegal activity so thats what I based his backstory on. Enjoy!

Joey grew up in the streets and spent his life surrounded by criminals. Joey was only 15 when his crime life began, he was walking home from school one day when he got a call from one of his friends asking if he wanted to help him rob a dairy around the corner of Joey’s house. Joey was hesitant but said yes. Later that day Joey’s friend bring his whole gang to rob this dairy, they entered the dairy and Joey began to grab everything from chip packets to the money in the cash register. Ever since that day Joey always agreed to anything that involved stealing or any other illegal business. Joey eventually turned 18 and this was when Joey’s drinking problems got out of hand, all day Joey would just drink, rob stores and threaten to shoot anyone that got in his way. Joey never got caught and continued his life in the street gangs for years and years until finally Joey tried to turn his life around.

Another task we had to complete was to fill out a google drawing with important ideas and relationships in the text. I choose the relationship between Joey, his sister and his nana because those relationships are crucial to the plot of this text. One of the important sections of the text that I selected was when Joey got kicked out of his nana’s house for all his problems in his life because this was when Joey really decided to better himslef and turn his life around. Here is my drawing with all the important relationships and parts of the text:

I hope you enjoyed reading about my learning this week regarding the story Boot Camp. What do you think Joey’s backstory was like?

Poems

The past two weeks of this term we have learnt all about poems, there are many types of poems ranging from short and funny to long and detailed, some of the poem types we have learned about are: Limerick poems, limerick poems are made to be short and funny and entertain whoever reads it, a limerick must contain 7-9 syllables in the first two lines, 5 syllables in the third and fourth line and the final line having 7-9 syllables, the first, second and fifth lines of a limerick must rhyme and the third and fourth lines must rhyme as well. Here is the limerick that I wrote.

There once was a cat named Jerry

His favorite food was berries

He always had fun

Even with no sun

Jerry is a pretty cool cat.

The next poem type we learned about is a haiku, haiku poems include 5 syllables in the first and third lines and 7 in the second line, haiku’s are traditionally used to be about nature and seasonal changes but they can be about anything you like. Here is a haiku poem that I made.

I play basketball

I love to shoot three pointers

Basketball is fun

The next poem that we learned about is called a bio poem, bio poems are about someone and they are filled with dtail about that person, like there name, who there family is or even what they fear. Bio poems can be about anybody even yourself! We used a template to create our bio poems, I chose to do Lebron James. Here is my bio poem.

Lebron James

Persevering, hard working, caring and determined

Playing basketball and giving back to the community

His family, his friends and his teammates

Failure and losing his family

When he will retire

For another championship

Playing with his oldest son

Happy when he wins and determined when he loses

Own his own nba team at some point

He is the greatest basketball player ever.

The next poem we learned about is called a list poem, list poems are about one thing and that one thing only, for example if you did basketball that whole poem would be about basketball. These poems do not have to rhyme and the lines in a list poem have to describe the theme of your poem, for example if your poem was about dogs you first line could be: Dogs, playful, smart and super cute and the next line could be: fur, fluffy, soft and elegant. Here is my list poem about sports.

Basketball, the dribble, the shot and the brilliant buzzer beater.

Rugby, the tackle, the intercept and the terrific try.

Soccer, the slide tackle, the kick and the perfect penalty shot.

Volleyball, the serve, the set and the spectacular spike.

American football, the throw, the stiff-arm and the amazing touchdown.

Cricket, the bowl, the hit and the super smash for six runs

Boxing, the jab, the uppercut and the powerful knockout.

Baseball, the pitch, the shot and the tremendous home run.

Tennis, the serve, the racket and the amazing hit.

There are many wonderful sports.

We had to create a slideshow filled with all the different poems that we learned about and created, here is my slideshow. Enjoy!

Did you learn anything about poems from my blog, if so would you create your own poem with your new knowledge?

Super Science

In science we have been learning about electricity. We got the opportunity to do our own science experiments with many different types of electricity from solar electricity to sound electricity. We used solar powered cars and made them drive around, we used clay and wires to create light and we learned so much more and had so much fun.

One of the experiments we did was battery power, the materials we needed for this experiment was:

  • 4 nails 2 copper and 2 zinc
  • Buzzer
  • Beaker labelled ‘T’ full of tap water
  • Empty specimen jar
  • Jar with salt
  • Plastic spoon
  • Empty beaker labelled ‘S’ (for discard salty water)
  • Several tissues
  • Student handouts

The task we were given was to create a loud screeching sound from the tools we were provided with. Before conducting my experiment I thought that we would not complete the experiment and we would not manage to create sound with the tools we given.

We began the experiment by filling the small cup 3/4 full of water. We then added two zinc nails and clipped them on each side of the cup. Then finally, we attached the buzzer and a teaspoon of salt. After doing all the steps correctly, there was no sound but we then realized that the reason there was no sound was because we used two zinc nails instead of one zinc nail and one copper nail. We swapped the zinc nail out for a copper nail so that there was one of each nail. We clipped the buzzer back onto the cup. Then the loud screeching sound started and we had successfully done this experiment.

This works because the water and salt blend together and become sodium and chloride. These two chemicals go through the buzzer with electricity and come out to release a loud screeching sound. After finishing my experiment I found out that my hypothesis was incorrect because we successfully made sound from the objects we were given and in my hypothesis I said that I do not think we would be able to make any noise but we managed to make sound and I proved myself wrong.

If I was to do this experiment again or something similar I now know that it is best to take your time and read the instructions very carefully because in science one very small mistake can change the whole outcome of your experiment. Something I found interesting during this learning was how important electricity is for us, so much things in our life require electricity and it makes me wonder what life would be like without any electricity.

With your new science knowledge would you ever attempt this experiment, if so what would your hypothesis be, would you do the experiment correctly?

Midwinter Breakfast Wheel Spin!

This week for maths we learned all about probability, this means stuff like “what is the probability that I flip heads on a coin?” or “what is the chance that I roll the number 4 on a six sided dice?” and questions like that. For our create we had to spin a wheel 45 times, this wheel had four possibility on it including, hotcakes, porridge, sausage and hot chocolate. We had to record the outcome of spinning this wheel 45 times and show what you noticed and the percentage of each breakfast option. Below is a slideshow with my information.

I hope you enjoyed my blog about the midwinter breakfast wheel spin! Did you learn anything from my blog post.

My Amazing Church!

This week for R.E we had to create our own church and add many features that are in real life churches across the world. I chose mine craft to create my church and added lots of things that churches have like water bowls, an alter and many more. Below is a slideshow showing the features in my mine craft church. Enjoy.

Have you seen any features in a church that I could add to my creation?
